NEW ORLEANS--Mandie Landry, a Democrat candidate for Louisiana state representative in District 91, has received the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO endorsement for the upcoming October 12 election. Landry strongly believes in unions and feels more New Orleanians could benefit from union representation.

“Unions allow people to organize for fair and better working conditions. They are the reason that we have safer workplaces,” Landry says. “Unfortunately many Louisiana workers don’t have the benefit of a union.  Our people deserve better and that means the protections that unions can provide, and the advantage of collective bargaining for increased benefits and pay.”

Landry grew up in a union household, and she knows firsthand what that support can mean for working families.

“My dad was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 60. My siblings and I knew the stability of growing up in a union household,” Landry says. “After graduating from high school, I received the union’s college scholarship; that paid for my books at a time when money was tight. When my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma, the union assisted us in finding legal representation. The union was there when we needed them the most, and my family and I will always be grateful.”
